Summary:

Treatment for acute ischemic stroke focuses on improving perfusion to the affected area of the brain by restoring blood flow through thrombolytic therapy, mechanical revascularization (the use of devices that extract the clot), or in some cases, emergent stenting. The goal is minimizing disability and improving functional outcomes. The impact of treatment on mortality has yet to be proved. Nurses and other healthcare professionals should be familiar with treatment options, understand the need for quick interventions, and recognize how their role can improve patient outcomes. This module provides healthcare providers with information about interventional radiology procedures to treat acute ischemic stroke.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to inform healthcare providers about endovascular procedures to treat acute ischemic stroke. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify emergent treatment options for patients experiencing an acute ischemic stroke
  • Describe the role of endovascular treatment in acute ischemic stroke treatment
  • Discuss management of a patient with stroke after an endovascular treatment
