Summary:

Eight years ago, healthcare organizations seeking accreditation used The Joint Commission or the American Osteopathic Association. Today a new option is available: The Det Norske Veritas GL. DNV was originally founded in 1864 Norway as a “risk management company whose sole purpose was to safeguard life, property, and environment all while practicing transparency” for maritime processes. However, as the company grew, company leaders identified the same needs to standardize and improve quality in the delivery of healthcare services and sought approval from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid for consideration as an accrediting organization. This continuing education module provides an overview of the healthcare accreditation process and the changes in process since the introduction of the Det Norske Veritas GL agency into the provider circle.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information about the goals and processes used by one of the newest accreditation bodies: Det Norske Veritas GL. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define accreditation and its impact on quality care and patient safety in the hospital setting
  • Describe the process of accreditation, including standards evaluated, timeline for a survey, and how findings are reported to the hospital for improvement
  • Differentiate the accreditation processes for the two primary accreditation bodies: The Joint Commission and the Det Norske Veritas GL

This is something to think about and know that there are more accrediting options out there that we as healthcare professionals should be aware of.
