Summary:

It is important for radiology professionals to understand the benefits and risks of patient exposure to ionizing radiation from commonly administered diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures. Healthcare professionals can mitigate the risks of radiation exposure following the ALARA (“as low as reasonably achievable”) principle set forth by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Recent regulations and evidence-based guidelines have shown how to reduce the patient’s exposure to radiation from imaging tests. Hospitals and medical practices have also implemented programs to audit patient radiation exposure and revise policies and procedures to adhere to the ALARA principle.

Objectives:

The goal of this educational program is to inform radiology professionals about the medical risks to patients of exposure to ionizing radiation in diagnostic imaging and interventional procedures, and how to reduce these risks in their practices. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Identify the three principles of radiation protection.
  • Describe the stochastic and deterministic effects of radiation exposure.
  • Compare radiation doses for various diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures.
  • Discuss three strategies radiology professionals can use to reduce patient exposure to radiation and monitor levels of exposure.
This course is intended for an interprofessional audience, including nurses, and radiologic technicians.
