Summary:

Stroke is a major neurological problem in the United States, affecting millions of people and their families. Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and the primary cause of serious disability. About 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke each year. The direct and indirect cost of stroke in the U.S. is estimated at $33 billion. This estimate includes acute care, acute rehabilitation, and follow-up care needed to manage ongoing neurological deficits. This module provides nurses and other healthcare professionals with an understanding of stroke, its treatment, and actions to increase public awareness to prevent stroke.

Objectives:

The purpose of this stroke continuing education program is to provide healthcare providers a greater understanding of stroke and its treatment and to help them educate the public about stroke. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
  • Identify risk factors for stroke
  • Describe interventions for patients with stroke
