Necro-radiology techniques and technology are on the rise, as autopsies are on the decline. With the aging population and increased death tolls across the United States, the need is increasing for radiographers trained in necro techniques. In addition to imaging their own patient population, hospitals have become an imaging resource for coroner offices. With shift shortages, this puts an even heavier burden on radiology departments and staff. Necro-radiology protocols vary from region to region, from facility to facility, and for different causes of death, which puts the focus on the skills and experience of the radiographer. Professional radiographers need to familiarize themselves with the basics of necro-radiology. Knowing what to expect and being prepared for a variety of body conditions are essential to the process, the diagnosis, and the emotional and mental state of the radiographer.

This necro-radiology continuing education course informs radiologic technologists and other healthcare professionals about the possible conditions of a deceased patient’s body, a variety of imaging protocols, the reasonings behind necro-imaging, precautions they should take when dealing with deceased patients, and what they might experience emotionally and mentally. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the various stages of death a body progresses through.
  • Recognize possible complications and obstacles in imaging the deceased.
  • Identify the use of the different modalities used in necro-radiology.
  • Recognize the precautions taken while imaging the deceased.
  • Recognize symptoms the radiographer may experience emotionally and mentally during a necro exam.
