CT image quality, which is essential to providing an accurate diagnosis, is determined by comparing an image to its actual object. In order to obtain the best image quality in CT, a technologist must examine all scanning parameters. Adjustment of any of these parameters may affect image contrast, the image’s spatial resolution, or the apparent noise on the image, and at the same time possibly affect the dose of ionizing radiation administered to the patient.


The goal of this continuing education program is to provide imaging technologists with information regarding image quality in CT. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify and explain factors controlling image appearance
  • Evaluate images for overall image quality
  • Define spatial resolution, low-contrast resolution, temporal resolution, noise, CT number accuracy and linearity, and uniformity
  • Discuss the factors affecting spatial and contrast resolution in CT
