Summary:

With the millions of computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans performed in the U.S. annually, knowledge of contrast agents to optimize radiographic imaging is essential. This continuing education course reviews common contrast agents that are currently in use, including their historical development, respective indications, and safety and monitoring parameters. It highlights specific adverse reactions of particular concern for each contrast medium. It describes the spectrum of allergic responses that occur and various treatments to employ so anyone working with these contrast media has a strong level of confidence with these agents.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide physicians, pharmacists, and imaging technologists with an overview of the most common contrast agents used in medical imaging, including the respective mechanisms of action, applications, and adverse effects. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Compare and contrast common contrast agents used in medical imaging.
  • List risk factors for adverse reactions to contrast agents.
  • Describe strategies for reducing the risk of serious adverse reactions to contrast agents.
  • Review how members of the interprofessional team can communicate and work together to reduce negative outcomes from contrast media.
