Summary:

Image fusion is a process in which nuclear medicine images, such as positron emission tomography, are superimposed with CT or MRI to produce detailed views of the body, allowing information from two exams to be correlated and interpreted in a single image. This leads to the gathering of precise information and accurate diagnoses. PET measures biochemical or physiological body functions, such as blood flow, oxygen use, and glucose metabolism; CT produces multiple anatomic images of the inside of the body. When these methods are combined, radiologists can pinpoint the anatomic location of abnormal metabolic activity within the body. This module will explore the principles and applications of combined PET/CT technology in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to educate radiologic technologists about the importance of fusion technology in cancer diagnosis and treatment and the future of fusion technology using PET and CT in patient care. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe basic concepts related to fusion technology
  • Compare and contrast PET/CT technology and other imaging modalities
  • List examples of positive outcomes related to fusion technology in cancer
  • Name future applications of fusion technology
