Summary:

Targeted therapies for cancer treatment are the foundation of precision treatment of aggressive cancers. Compared to chemotherapeutic agents and radiation therapy, which lack selectivity for cancer cells compared to healthy cells, targeted therapies are designed to affect specific molecular targets that have high expression in cancer cells. As more targeted therapies are approved and more patients are eligible for these treatments, healthcare professionals will have more exposure to these medications. It is imperative for them to be familiar with this group of medications because they play a major role in preventing dangerous drug interactions and minimizing severe side effects of targeted therapies. This course will provide information about targeted therapies. Molecular targets will be discussed, along with the risks and potential toxicities associated with specific therapies. Information on how to minimize drug interactions will also be presented.

Objectives:

Targeted therapies are a specialized form of cancer treatment. This goal of this course is to review new therapies and details about molecular targets, indications for use, associated toxicities, and therapy limitations. After studying the information provided here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the mechanisms of targeted therapies and how they treat cancer compared to traditional treatments.
  • Identify adverse effects and toxicities that can occur with the administration of targeted therapies.
  • Describe the differences between small molecule inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies.
  • Identify the molecular targets of target therapies.
  • Review the limitations of target therapy treatment.
