Summary:

The likelihood that a brownie with nuts could be good for your heart seems counterintuitive. However, evidence suggests that both cocoa and tree nuts can indeed help prevent coronary heart disease (CHD), which is the leading cause of death in the United States. The cardioprotective mechanisms involve lowering cholesterol, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, regulating blood pressure, and improving endothelial function and insulin resistance. This course will explore why nuts and cocoa are heart healthy and how to incorporate them into a heart-healthy diet.

Objectives:

The goal of this diet and cardiovascular health continuing education program is to provide guidelines for dietetic professionals, fitness professionals, health educators, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and radiologic technologists on how to incorporate nuts and chocolate into a heart-healthy diet and information on why this dietary change will benefit patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss three ways in which the consumption of tree nuts may reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease
  • Explain three ways in which cocoa intake may reduce the risk of developing CHD
  • Illustrate how chocolate and nuts can be incorporated into a heart-healthy diet
