Summary:

The magnetic resonance environment has specific safety concerns related to the size and strength of magnetic fields and radiofrequency energy. Medical devices and ferromagnetic objects may malfunction within the magnetic field or pose a projectile risk, which could cause harm or injury to patients and staff. Controlling access to the MR environment and properly screening patients prevents accidents and reduces risks for injury. Personnel within the MR environment are identified as MR personnel and non-MR personnel. MR personnel are classified further by level of safety education. Only MR personnel with sufficient training and education are authorized to perform the final screening of patients entering the MR environment and access the MR equipment. Maintaining the safety and security of the MR environment also requires specific plans for facility design and emergency preparedness.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to educate and inform magnetic resonance (MR) technologists and other healthcare professionals about the importance of safety in the MR environment, and describe recommendations for preventing accidents and injuries related to MR imaging (MRI). After studying the information here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the basic principles of MR technology
  • List the potential hazards and risks associated with MRI
  • Recognize guidelines and recommendations associated with MRI safety
  • Explain appropriate screening procedures for patients undergoing MRI
