Summary:

The obstetrical applications of magnetic resonance imaging have increased in recent years owing to advances in safety and technology. MRI is now available for the evaluation of a fetus after the detection or suspicion of abnormalities by another imaging method. Early prenatal diagnosis of fetal abnormalities or malformations influences parental counseling, pregnancy management, and neonatal treatment. MRI during pregnancy is safe for the mother and fetus, and it offers many advantages over other imaging methods. Although ultrasound remains the primary imaging tool for prenatal evaluations, MRI is an important complementary tool for the assessment of many organ systems because it can confirm suspected anomalies or detect abnormalities not visualized by ultrasound. MRI can also differentiate between isolated anomalies and those that exist as part of a more complex syndrome.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide radiologic technologists with an overview of MRI techniques used to evaluate normal growth and development and be used to diagnose fetal abnormalities. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the safety of MRI performed during the prenatal period
  • List indications for fetal MRI examinations
  • Identify advantages and limitations of fetal MRI compared with other imaging modalities used in the prenatal period
