Summary:

Computed tomography colonography uses computed tomography images of the large intestine to detect polyps and neoplasms in the colon and rectum. Techniques for performing CTC vary among institutions, but all CTC examinations require a bowel prep and colonic distention. The education and experience of the radiologist interpreting the CTC results is the most significant factor affecting the test. CTC is useful as a screening tool for colorectal cancer because it has high sensitivity and specificity for detecting medium — and large-size colon polyps. CTC also offers improved comfort and convenience over traditional screening modalities, including colonoscopy. Radiation exposure is the most significant risk factor associated with CTC, but protocols that minimize the radiation dose can mitigate the risk.

Objectives:

The goal of this computed tomography colonography continuing education program is to provide radiology technologists with an explanation of the factors influencing the use of CTC as a screening tool for colorectal cancer. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify factors that affect CTC results
  • Explain the effectiveness of CTC in colorectal cancer screening
  • Describe risks associated with CTC
