Summary:

Pediatric patients are not adults. Generally, the pediatric patient will always require special attention and can sometimes present a challenge to the radiologic technologist’s interpersonal skills. If working with a pediatric patient, the technologist will need to fully use his or her technical knowledge. However, the technologist will also need to develop patience and have a deeper understanding of how to use effective communication skills. Although immobilization devices are often necessary, they should be used only after less restrictive measures have been attempted, remembering that the most effective method of avoiding the need to immobilize a patient is communication.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to enhance the healthcare provider’s knowledge of pediatric imaging, detail the role of the radiologic technologist, and outline the special considerations needed to provide outstanding patient care during pediatric imaging. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify professional, appropriate, age-effective communication strategies for pediatric patients, parents, and guardians during radiographic procedures
  • Describe safe methods of immobilizing a pediatric patient
  • Explain proper radiation protection and safety measures, techniques, and practices used in pediatric radiography (ALARA principle)
