Summary:

Aquatic therapy is a specialized procedure growing in popularity, but every clinician needs to ask: Is immersed exercise safe for my patient with COPD, congestive heart failure (CHF), myocardial infarction (MI), or other cardiopulmonary disorders? If it is safe, the question then becomes: Is it effective for the impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities that often accompany these conditions? For decades, multiple myths have edged into the collective medical understanding about the benefits and potential harms of aquatic exercise. In this course, we deconstruct these myths with the latest evidence and then turn our attention to how to provide skilled, reimbursable therapy for these cardiopulmonary-compromised populations.

Objectives:

At the end of this introductory course, the participant will walk away with a basic working knowledge of what makes immersed exercise such a powerful tool, including both the benefits and potential risks. In addition, the participant will be able to:
  • List cardiopulmonary reactions to the hydrostatic pressure present during vertical immersion
  • Describe at least one way that aquatic exercise can produce dangerous stressors on the cardiac system
  • Describe at least one way that aquatic exercise can produce stressors on the pulmonary system
  • List ways that documentation can support the skilled need for cardiopulmonary training performed in water
  • Describe aquatic exercises that can provide a challenging respiratory or cardiac environment
