This continuing education course will develop healthcare providers’ knowledge of diabetic neuropathy and treatment options. Learners will be exposed to background information on the disease state including definitions, classification, etiology, pathophysiology, and prognosis. They will review common signs and symptoms of the disease and will focus on disease prevention strategies such as glycemic control, lifestyle modifications, and foot care. This is followed by an in-depth review of current treatment options for diabetic neuropathy including treatment of pain and autonomic disorders such as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and urogenital neuropathies.


The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information about diabetic neuropathy, including disease state background, prevention and treatment of pain, and other manifestations of the disease. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe common symptoms of diabetic neuropathy
  • Identify three methods of diabetic neuropathy prevention
  • Discuss pharmacologic treatments for diabetic neuropathy pain and other disease manifestations
