Deep brain stimulation surgery for patients with Parkinson’s disease involves implantation of electrodes into the brain to reduce symptoms of the disease. Long-term data at three years follow-up reveal that 50% to 60% of patients show improvement. The dose of anti-Parkinson medication is reduced soon after surgery, but some patients need frequent medication adjustments with time. The risks and complications of DBS are related to the surgery itself, electrode placement, hardware implanted and stimulation of other nerves, and DBS is not a curative procedure as PD is a progressive disease.

The goal of this Parkinson’s disease/deep brain stimulation continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, EMTS and paramedics with knowledge about deep brain stimulation for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and various other neurological disorders. Following the completion of this educational activity, you will be able to:
  • Describe how deep brain stimulation is performed
  • Discuss the medical disorders that have been treated with deep brain stimulation
  • List the benefits and complications of deep brain stimulation
