Summary:

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) is the new name for the condition previously called joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS or HMS) or EDS hypermobility type. Although joint laxity is the most visible sign, hEDS may be associated with developmental delay (in children), severe or chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain in adults and children, as well as fatigue and sleep disturbance, autonomic dysfunction, fragile and poorly healing skin, anxiety and panic disorder, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and urogenital abnormalities. Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) describes the range of EDS-related conditions associated with joint hypermobility.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module on Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) is to provide healthcare providers with information about prevalence, presentation, diagnosis, and management of HSD. By the end of this module, the participant should be able to:
  • Apply the 2017 criteria used to diagnose hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and describe HSD
  • Identify 10 comorbidities commonly seen in individuals with HSD
  • Discuss three key management approaches for patients with HSD
