Summary:

As the landscape of healthcare changes dramatically in light of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly called the Affordable Care Act, the healthcare industry will continue to place more emphasis on research and outcomes. Clinical expertise cannot be replaced by evidence alone, as the exclusive use of evidence-based approaches may limit or diminish patient recovery, future treatment innovations, and clinical advancements.

Objectives:

The goal of this research and outcomes continuing education module is to provide physical therapists with information about the risks and caveats of considering evidence-based practice in their care plan. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify three weaknesses of using observational studies and randomized controlled trials in research
  • Describe why patient involvement in decision making could be helpful to healthcare providers
  • Explain the danger of evidence-based practice becoming too prescriptive and how to avoid this danger
