Pregnancy adverse effects vary among women and between pregnancies. For some, adverse effects are severe; for others, they are barely noticeable. It is important for dietitians and other healthcare professionals on the team to be aware of the adverse effects a woman may experience in pregnancy because they can interfere with her ability to get the necessary nutrition. These adverse effects include constipation, heartburn, leg cramps, nausea and vomiting. The RD’s recommendations for specific foods and supplements and appropriate exercise can help alleviate adverse effects and sustain a healthy pregnancy. Exercise also helps prepare the mother’s body for labor and postpartum recovery.

The goal of this pregnancy continuing education program is to provide dietitians, dietary managers, fitness professionals, health educators, and physical therapists with adequate information on the nutritional implications of common adverse effects experienced during pregnancy, as well as the role of exercise in pregnancy. After studying the information presented here, the learner will be able to:
  • Discuss various symptoms from the adverse effects of pregnancy and how they might be alleviated
  • Explain the benefits of exercise during pregnancy
  • Describe the precautions that should be taken when a woman exercises while pregnant
