Aging is a natural process that affects the whole body, and the decline of body functions is inevitable. Exercise is the single most efficacious intervention for older adults used by physical therapists. PTs should take into consideration normal changes seen during the aging process to design an appropriate strengthening program for the older adult.

The purpose of this continuing education program about strength training for older adults is to provide PTs with knowledge of clinically relevant changes that occur with aging as well as basic strength training concepts for older adults. After completing this module, you will be able to:
  • Recognize normal changes in aging that are relevant for strength training
  • Understand the concept of specificity
  • Design an appropriate strength training program for the average older adult without a pathology
