Nearly 26 million Americans have been diagnosed with asthma, a disease marked by variable and recurring symptoms, airflow obstruction, bronchial hyper-responsiveness, and underlying inflammation. Inflammation of the airways and airway hyper-responsiveness are the hallmark pathophysiological features of asthma, resulting in the typical symptoms: cough, wheezing, chest tightness, and breathlessness. The goal of asthma pharmacotherapy is to relieve or minimize symptoms by targeting the underlying pathophysiological processes. Because of the high prevalence of asthma in children (9.5%) and adults (7.7%), all clinicians must to be up-to-date on the current guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of this chronic illness. This module will summarize the key guideline changes with a focus on adults.
The goal of this program is to provide a summary of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Expert Panel Report-3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Asthma, focusing on adults. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- List at least three common symptoms of asthma
- Describe the asthma severity and control classifications
- Differentiate between long-term controller and quick-relief asthma medications and describe at least one potential adverse effect for each medication in each class
