Summary:

Marfan syndrome is an autosomal-dominant inherited disorder of the connective tissue, occurring once in every 10,000 to 20,000 births in the United States. Patients experience involvement of the aorta, eyes, skeleton, and other organs and structures. Health problems vary among patients. Healthcare providers who work in diverse settings should be well informed about Marfan syndrome so that they can promote early diagnosis and appropriate treatments for this population.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to provide nurses, athletic trainers, EMTs/paramedics, fitness professionals, health educators, physical therapists and physicians with information about the manifestations, pathology and treatment of Marfan syndrome. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify pathological changes associated with Marfan syndrome
  • Discuss major criteria needed for a diagnosis
  • Describe special needs of children and pregnant women with this syndrome
