Evidence-based practice involves considering the best available research, clinical experience and patient values to help guide a course of care. Researchers and physicians from the United States joined forces with colleagues from Canada and produced a series of articles for the Journal of the American Medical Association that came to be known as the Users’ Guides to the Medical Literature. A book by the same name was later published and remains an excellent resource for anyone interested in understanding and practicing EBP. The idea of utilizing scientific literature to improve patient care caught on with other healthcare providers as well (PT, OT, RN, DDS, DC) and continues to affect healthcare decisions today.
The goal of this continuing education program is to provide physical therapists and social workers with information about the evolution and application of evidence-based practice. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
- Discuss the origins and development of evidence-based practice
- Locate and analyze evidence-based literature that is relevant to your practice setting
- Integrate evidence-based practice into your current practice
This course is intended for an interprofessional audience, including physical therapists and social workers.
