Summary:

Performing activities of daily living requires coordination among the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems. Deterioration of these systems affects balance and increases the likelihood of falls. Fall risk assessment tools can assist therapists in determining appropriate therapeutic interventions, allow healthcare providers to monitor meaningful balance changes, and improve reimbursement by allowing practitioners to document objective balance findings consistently. This course engages the learner in how to evaluate and treat older adults with vestibular dysfunction using current, evidence-based strategies. The goal of this vestibular system educational course is to improve physical therapists’ knowledge about vestibular dysfunction and balance retraining with older adults.

Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Identify balance, fall, and dizziness assessment tools.
  • Summarize fall prevention guidelines for the older adult.
  • Recall vestibular-specific assessments and evidence-based interventions.
  • Describe appropriate evidence-based physical therapy interventions to improve balance and decrease the risk of patient falls.

Comprehensive and concise overview of vestibular impairments and interventions. Lacking in visual representation and would benefit from images for testing positions and procedures.
