Summary:

Physical therapy professionals treat older adults with dizziness, balance disorders, and fall-related injuries across all practice settings. Therefore, it is important to have an adequate understanding of the factors that contribute to fall risk in order to develop an appropriate treatment plan or refer patients to another medical professional when needed. This course provides an overview of risk factors for falls and the role of the somatosensory, visual, and vestibular systems in maintaining balance. Learners will gain an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system and common vestibular disorders that can contribute to balance dysfunction and falls.

The goal of this vestibular system continuing education program is to improve physical therapists’ knowledge about vestibular dysfunction and balance retraining with older adults.

Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Identify the body’s systems that contribute to static and dynamic balance.
  • Describe the anatomy of the somatosensory, visual, and vestibular systems.
  • Differentiate between central and peripheral vestibular disorders.
  • Describe at least three causes of peripheral vestibular dysfunction.
