Summary:

The impact on the health and financial well-being of family caregivers is significant. U.S. companies experience billions of dollars in lost productivity as a result of family caregiving’s impact on their employees. Nurses and other healthcare professionals have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives and health of family caregivers. Research documents a chance to improve the health of caregivers when programs are designed to save caregivers time; to relieve them from their responsibilities, even briefly; and to reduce stress and make them feel valued and cared about.

Objectives:

The goal of this caregiver continuing education program is to help nurses, EMTs and paramedics, occupational therapists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and social workers understand the effect of providing care on the family caregiver and in particular, the employed family caregiver. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the issues and trends surrounding family caregiving
  • Discuss the effects of family caregiving when one is also employed
  • Relate the implications of family caregiving for nursing and other disciplines
