Summary:

Ultrasound is one of the most commonly used modalities in clinical practice. It has been suggested that ultrasound can produce biophysical effects, which can be defined as cellular functions that are enhanced or catalyzed by ultrasound application. The biophysical effects are the result of sound wave energy being converted to a source of superficial or deep heat to healing tissues. Common clinical uses of therapeutic ultrasound include pain control, tissue extensibility, wound healing, fracture repair, enhanced tendon and ligament healing, and resorption of calcium deposits.

Objectives:

The goal of this therapeutic ultrasound continuing education program is to provide physical therapists with an evidence-based review of the application of ultrasound as a therapeutic modality and explain the implications of use during physical therapy interventions. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the application of ultrasound and propose a use of the modality for successful musculoskeletal injury intervention
  • Describe ultrasound parameters specific to the treatment goal of increasing tissue temperature
  • Provide a review of the current literature regarding the effectiveness of ultrasound application on musculoskeletal injuries

A lot of the new US machines have been set up for the proper settings based on the intensity that you choose, which really simplifies the set up process. This is a very simplified and understandable review of parameters specific to the goals of tx.
