Probably all clinical, practicing PTs encounter patients with osteoporosis or a potential for developing the disease. More than 10 million women and men in the U.S. have osteoporosis, and 34 million more have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for this disease. The World Health Organization estimates that up to 70% of women older than 80 years of age have osteoporosis. Although osteoporosis strikes more women than men, both men and women lose bone mass at approximately the same rate by age 65 or 70. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, one in two women and one in eight men over the age of 50 in the U.S. will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. As the median age of the population in the U.S. increases, osteoporosis will become a major health concern in almost every setting in which PTs work.
The goal of this program is to update physical therapists’ knowledge about the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
- Describe osteoporosis and identify those at risk.
- List four current treatment modalities used to combat osteoporosis.
- Relate four appropriate strategies aimed at prevention.
