Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disorder characterized by decreased bone mass and strength. As bone mass diminishes during disease progression, bones become increasingly fragile; the risk of fractures increases from even minimal trauma, such as sneezing. Today, almost 10 million people in the U.S. have osteoporosis, and more than 43 million others have low bone mass (osteopenia) that increases their risk for fractures. One in two women and one in eight men older than 50 in the U.S. will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. This continuing education program will update physical therapists’ knowledge about the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
The goal of this continuing education program is to update physical therapists’ knowledge about the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe osteoporosis and identify those at risk
- List four current treatment modalities for osteoporosis
- Relate four appropriate strategies aimed at prevention
