Summary:

Adhesive capsulitis, otherwise known as frozen shoulder syndrome (FSS), is encountered frequently by physical and occupational therapists who treat patients in orthopedic settings. This extremely painful shoulder disorder impairs active and passive range of motion, strength, and function to the degree that a patient may be completely unable to use the affected extremity. The goal of this program is to help therapists identify the etiology, presentation, and treatments associated with adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder.

Objectives:

The goal of this adhesive capsulitis continuing education program is to help physical and occupational therapists identify the etiology, presentation and treatments associated with adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder, commonly known as frozen shoulder syndrome [FSS]). After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the etiology and risk factors associated with FSS
  • Demonstrate an understanding of therapy techniques appropriate to the treatment of FSS
  • Explain the most frequently used medical management strategies for patients with FSS
