Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common upper extremity entrapment neuropathy, and thought to be present in up to 5% of the U.S. population. This seemingly straightforward compression syndrome of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel is vulnerable to a series of factors, ranging from inadequate anatomical space inside the carpal tunnel to changes in the body’s fluid balance, and from underlying inflammatory or metabolic disorders to external forces such as vibration, repetition or poor positioning. Physical therapists need to be able to identify the etiology, presentation and treatments associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.
The goal of this carpal tunnel syndrome continuing education program is to help physical therapists identify the etiology, presentation and treatments associated with CTS. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the anatomy of the carpal tunnel, and discuss the mechanisms of injury associated with CTS
- Explain the most common surgical approaches for patients with CTS
- Discuss evidence-based nonsurgical approaches to counteract entrapment neuropathy at the carpal tunnel
