Each year, one-third of adults over age 65 and half of those over age 85 fall, resulting in approximately 1.6 million ED visits. People who fall experience a greater functional decline in activities of daily living and in physical and social activities than people who do not fall. Exercise has been proven to reduce fall risk, but there are many methods and dosages of exercise, not all of which are equally effective.


The goal of this exercise and fall prevention continuing education program is to familiarize physical therapists with how exercise positively improves a senior’s balance, reaction time, functional ability and risk for falls in both community and institutional settings. After completing this module, you will be able to:
  • Describe how types of exercise, including strength, balance, aerobic and flexibility training work to reduce fall risk
  • Create exercise programs for frail and institutionalized patients
  • Design solutions to keep older adults exercising after physical therapy treatment has concluded

well written, informative, documented evidence, held attention but stats sometimes confusing. tests for balance need to be used more in ltc settings and utmost impt and needs implemented asap before get to that point lesson for all and conveyed
