Over one quarter of adults over age 65 fall each year, contributing to nearly three million emergency department visits. A person who experiences a fall will demonstrate a greater functional decline in activities of daily living and in physical and social activities than people who do not fall. Exercise has been proven to reduce fall risk, but there are many methods and dosages of exercise, not all of which are equally effective.

The goal of this exercise and fall prevention continuing education program is to familiarize physical therapy professionals with how exercise can positively improve older adult’s balance, reaction time, functional ability, and risk for falls in the community and in long-term care settings.
The content in this course is applicable to physical therapy professionals.
After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Describe how strength, balance, aerobic, and flexibility exercises work to reduce fall risk.
  • Outline current exercise prescription guidelines for older adults.
  • Summarize at least three ways to improve adherence to exercise programs.
