Summary:

Headache disorders are becoming more prevalent. Physical therapists are seeing more patients referred to physical therapy with a diagnosis of chronic headache, tension-type headache or cervicogenic headache. These patients can be very difficult to treat when the source of the headache is unknown to the patient and the physical therapist. The source of pain may not be obvious during the initial evaluation, challenging the physical therapist with where to begin treatment. The physical therapist needs to be aware of the various categories of headache as well as the available treatments in order to function as part of the multidisciplinary medical team. More studies need to address these interventions in conjunction with the rest of the healthcare team to produce better outcomes for these patients.

Objectives:

The goal of this headache continuing education program is to inform physical therapy practitioners of the different types of headaches and describe various treatment options for each. After reading this module, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate between migraine and tension-type headache disorder symptoms and their typical presentations
  • Understand medicinal treatments for headache disorder and the importance of adherence to medicinal protocols
  • Understand evidence-based treatments for headache disorders and integration into evaluation and treatment
