While physical therapists may associate multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) with older, immunocompromised patients, MDRO outbreaks have hit the general population, even affecting unlikely groups, such as school-age children and professional athletes. This course discusses the various types of MDROs that affect healthcare in our society. It defines the settings and disease processes of MDROs, and offers information on prevention that should be incorporated into the daily routine of physical therapists and all healthcare providers.
The goal of this multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) program is to educate physical therapists about MDROs and discuss interventions to decrease the transmission of MDROs in physical therapy practice. After completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Describe the types, transmission and disease process of pervasive MDROs
- Explain the pathogenesis of prominent MDROs
- Discuss the preventive measures that healthcare providers should use to prevent the transmission of MDROs
