The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) notes that nearly all patients experience some level of distress at diagnosis, throughout treatment, and beyond into survivorship. NCCN Guideline for Patients®: Distress Supportive Care Book Series defines distress as “an unpleasant experience of a mental, physical, social, or spiritual nature. It can affect the way you think, feel, or act. Distress may make it harder to cope with having cancer, its symptoms, or its treatment.”(p8) Using the NCCN’s distress thermometer prevalence rates of distress in cancer patients vary from 22% to 58%. Responses may vary from distress to diagnosable psychiatric conditions including Adjustment Disorders to Major Depressive Disorders. These psychological needs must often be addressed before meeting the patient’s informational needs. Healthcare professionals play a vital role in assessing and screening for psychological distress. This course is designed to enhance the expertise, effectiveness, and confidence of clinicians who are working with oncology patients in any setting.
