Course Overview

As a psychoeducational group leader, you know that keeping participants active and engaged can sometimes be difficult. Even if you are an experienced practitioner, conducting classes with participants who have a serious mental illness (SMI) can be considerably challenging. In this course, you will learn strategies to help you effectively conduct psychoeducational sessions that will highlight your strengths and give you some new ideas for improving or expanding your repertoire of skills. You will learn strategies on how to prepare for conducting psychoeducational groups and to improve the overall effectiveness of these groups. While many of the skills you learn in this course are applicable to other populations, you will be given specific strategies effective for working with individuals who have SMI with the possible accompanying cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges.

About the Course Author

Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Professional Writing from The College of New Jersey and a Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University. She is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and has particular interest in resilience and secondary traumatic stress among behavioral health providers. The majority of Stephanie’s work has included behavioral health counseling and medical case management. Stephanie served as part of the National Health Service Corps from 2016-2018, providing outpatient counseling to underserved populations including military service members and their families. Stephanie has designed and delivered training on many topics such as LGBTQIA+ sensitivity, youth suicide prevention, and how to provide in-community services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
