There are often conflicting and vast differences in understanding the diagnosis of gender dysphoria, as well as the meanings of the related terms: gender, gender identity, gender expression, gender variance and transgender. Mental health providers would benefit personally and professionally by exploring such terminologies and associations, as well as better understanding systemic challenges faced by the gender-variant community. Additionally, exploring the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition: DSM-5 will hold significant implications for clinical practice.
This gender dysphoria continuing education module will help social workers and psychologists understand the complexities surrounding practice with members of the gender-variant community, as well as explore the diagnosis and diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition: DSM-5. After completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Discuss the background and prevalence of gender dysphoria
- Identify the diagnostic criteria as applicable to the DSM-5
- Define key practice approaches to best assist individuals and families managing issues related to gender dysphoria
