Food wars are every caregiver‘s nightmare. It is not unusual for a toddler to exhibit a number of feeding behaviors that parents consider problematic. Food jags, refusal to try new foods or sensitivity to the sensory properties of food is common. For a small group of children, food restriction can be indicative of a developmental or medical issue. Strategies to address limited diets include identifying age-appropriate textures and portion sizes for toddlers, establishing regular mealtimes to capitalize on a child‘s hunger and introducing new foods in conjunction with familiar foods. Parents can support expanding food choice by modeling positive eating habits, creating consistency in mealtime routine and expectations, and offering developmentally appropriate and health-promoting foods while supporting the child‘s development and emerging independence.

Patricia Novak, MPH, RD, LD, CLE, has more than 30 years' experience working in pediatric nutrition. She has developed school nutrition curricula and a weight control program for children with autism spectrum disorders. She has published in leading professional journals and written book chapters, and is a frequent presenter at regional, national, and international conferences.
