Course Overview

To date, healthcare professionals such as pharmacists, technicians, and physicians, have been involved in fraudulent activity at the level of retail pharmacies, compounding pharmacies, online pharmacies, healthcare systems, pharmaceutical manufacturers, payers, and pharmacy benefit managers. There have been many recent examples and schemes of pharmacy fraud taking place across the country, some of which involve false claims, kickbacks, or inappropriate billing, in exchange for monetary gain. In most cases, these cases are direct violations of fraud and abuse laws, including False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, Physician Self-Referral Law (Stark Law), OIG Exclusion Statute, and Civil Monetary Penalties Law (CMPL), despite the fact that healthcare professionals are meant to uphold these laws to better serve patients. Additionally, there have been several established methods and initiatives developed by the government, state, professional organizations, and independent institutions to combat pharmacy fraud. Therefore, pharmacists and technicians must be vigilant to ensure they are able to recognize, prevent, and report fraud, waste, and abuse.
