Course Overview

More than 1 million people have Parkinson‘s disease, and by 2020 there may be 40 million more. The corpus striatum in the cerebral hemisphere, the subthalamic nucleus in the diencephalon, and the substantia nigra in the midbrain interconnect to form the basal ganglia. When the substantia nigra doesn‘t produce enough dopamine, signs and symptoms of PD become apparent. Physical therapists need to be knowledgeable about this disease to execute treatment protocols designed to challenge specific deficits that affect overall performance of everyday activities.

Rebecca Austere-Blanton, PT, DPT, GCS, works for Kindred at Home in Portland, Maine. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Exercise Physiology from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.  Following graduation, she worked with some of the more prominent orthopedic surgeons in the area providing their post-operative patients with appropriate, custom exercise programs to assure that they maintained quality of life and mobility after physical therapy. She also coached a NCAA Division 1 men's volleyball team at East Stroudsburg University, providing conditioning and strength training expertise.  From there Becky migrated to Philadelphia, PA where she received a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Drexel University in 2005. During her time at Drexel she had the privilege of training at the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma in New York City and ProSports Physical Therapy in Scarsdale, NY. She then earned her Geriatric Certified Specialist certification in 2010 and is currently one of the few certified Geriatric Specialists in Maine. She has worked at New York University Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases/Rusk Institute as well as at New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland. She has also guest lectured at the University of New England, has presented research at the annual APTA Combined Section Meeting and has published several abstracts and professional education manuals.
