Healthcare professionals often work with clients suffering from traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular accidents, or dementia. These conditions are often accompanied by confabulation, which may interfere with obtaining clients’ cooperation for nursing care and rehabilitation. Recent studies suggest that some traditional approaches for reducing confabulation, such as teaching clients to double-check the accuracy of their memories, may sometimes be ineffective or even counterproductive. Healthcare providers must understand alternative approaches.
The goal of this program is to improve the understanding of speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, and nurses with respect to the presentation and collaborative interventions pertaining to confabulation. After completing this continuing education course, you will be able to:
- Define and describe at least five types of confabulation
- Differentiate two formal and two informal measures of confabulation as well as describe strengths and limitations of these measures
- Discuss two approaches for treating confabulation and at least one technique that is consistent with each approach
