Interprofessional teamwork is a contemporary approach to healthcare that assumes a working understanding of each team member’s roles and areas of expertise within the working group. This case-based article reflects the perspectives of four professionals with expertise in providing medical and rehabilitative services to an older adult who has experienced a left hemispheric stroke soon after having surgery for knee replacement. It explains the evaluation and intervention approaches and reasoning of a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech-language pathologist, and considers how they work with one another, with other professional care providers, and with the patient and his/her family to provide excellent care during the rehabilitation process. By completing this module, you will be better prepared to function interprofessionally in an adult rehabilitation context.
The goal of this interprofessional continuing education module is to provide an overview of the roles and interactions among a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech-language pathologist as they address the complex rehabilitation and medical needs of an older adult who has experienced a post-surgical ischemic stroke. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the distinct and interactive roles of nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists who work in concert to address the immediate and long-term needs of an older adult patient with complex health problems
- Articulate typical assessment and intervention approaches across the acute care and rehabilitation phases of treating an older adult patient who has experienced an embolic stroke
- Explain how the roles and functions of an interprofessional healthcare team complement one another, requiring interprofessional communication and coordination of services
