Sexual health and sexuality have received significant attention in the last decade — not just from healthcare stakeholders but also across the spectrum of human-service providers. In spite of the increasing awareness of the importance of sex, gender identity, and sexuality in all aspects of health, barriers to the advancement of knowledge about sex differences in health and illness persist. This module presents an overview of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community and its contentious history with the healthcare systems. Definitions of key concepts related to sexuality and gender variables and general implications for clinical education, practice, and research will be discussed.
The goal of this lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer continuing education program is to enhance the understanding of issues that the LGBTQ community has when navigating and using the healthcare system. After studying the information here, you will be able to:
- Define key terminologies, including those related to sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity
- Describe historical underpinnings affecting the LGBTQ community
- Recognize current sexuality perspectives and future trajectories of LGBTQ healthcare issues
- Discuss general interprofessional practice guidelines in the care of LGBTQ healthcare recipients
