Healthcare professionals interact with people with spinal cord injury (SCI) in many practice settings, including the paramedic or EMT who extricates a patient from the scene of an accident, the ED nurse who encounters the patient immediately after injury, and the nurses and therapists in a variety of settings who may care for a person with a SCI throughout his or her life. People with SCIs are living longer. Despite significant advances in SCI treatment outcomes in the past several decades, a SCI has lifelong effects on a person’s physical, psychological, financial, vocational, and social functioning. This two-part series on SCI will provide healthcare professionals with information about the management of acute and chronic SCI. Part one reviews basic spinal cord anatomy, describes common mechanisms of SCI and changes in bodily function after injury, and discusses patient management during the acute phase of SCI treatment.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, athletic trainers, audiologists, dietitians, EMTs/paramedics, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists with information about the acute phase of SCI. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe basic spinal cord anatomy and common mechanisms of SCI.
  • Identify changes in bodily functions after SCI.
  • Discuss 13 high-risk nursing diagnoses that affect people with SCI in the acute phase of treatment.
