All medical team members must play an active role in adopting, modeling and encouraging practices to prevent the spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in healthcare facilities. All healthcare workers as a team must discuss, understand and follow procedures to prevent the spread of MRSA when they are working with patients. These include hand hygiene, contact precautions and dedicated equipment. In addition, they can educate the public about MRSA, providing accurate information to counterbalance the sometimes sensational reports in the lay media.
The purpose of this CE program is to provide nurses, dietitians, health educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, laboratory professionals and imaging technologists with information about the growing problem of MRSA in healthcare and strategies to reduce its spread. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Discuss the epidemiology of MRSA
- Identify three factors that put hospital patients at risk for MRSA
- Describe three strategies healthcare professionals as a team can use to prevent and control the spread of MRSA in healthcare facilities
