Summary:

More than 1 million joint replacements are done in the United States each year; of these, there are about 719,000 knee replacement procedures and 332,000 hip replacement procedures. The number of people having total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has increased significantly in the past 25 years, driven in part by an increase in the aging population and increasing rates of obesity. This two-part continuing education series will provide healthcare providers with information about total hip arthroplasty (THA) and TKA. Part 1 discusses the effects of arthritis on the knee and hip as weight-bearing joints, outlines indications for joint replacement, and reviews joint replacement surgical procedures and patient management by interprofessional healthcare providers.

Objectives:

The purpose of this joint replacement CE module is to provide healthcare providers, specifically nurses, health educators, emergency medical professionals, occupational therapists, and physical therapists with information about total hip and total knee replacements, including the effects of arthritis on joints, indications for surgery and surgical management. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the effects of arthritis on the hip and knee joints
  • State indications for total hip replacement and total knee replacement
  • Discuss the surgical procedures used for hip and knee joint replacements

It was a good basic overview, did not really add any additional knowledge that I did not know prior working at a therapist in a rehab.
