Summary:

Inclusion and accessibility are integral values held by healthcare and education professionals. The advancement of technology has facilitated access to information rapidly, making material more widely available than ever; however, in the rush to embrace new means of instruction, accessibility issues may have been overlooked. In 1996, the U.S. Department of Justice clarified that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements apply to all programs offered on the Internet, which include all educational digital materials for clients, patients, students and the general public, as well as all digital professional conference materials. This means that web page materials, and formalized online courses and programs, must be made available to qualified individuals with disabilities.

Objectives:

The goal of this digital materials accessibility module is to provide occupational therapists, dietitians, fitness professionals, health educators, pharmacists, physical therapists, physicians, radiologic technologists and social workers with up-to-date information related to accessibility of digital materials for individuals with disabilities. After studying the following information, you will be able to:
  • Identify and understand recent additions to current laws related to accessibility of digital materials
  • Identify how accessibility can be achieved through the modification or well-planned creation of digital materials
  • Identify resources to facilitate the creation of accessible digital materials
