Celiac disease is an inherited autoimmune disease affecting about 1% of the U.S. population. Currently, the only treatment for celiac disease is lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet, and because of that, dietitians and other health professionals play an important role in providing education and support to these patients. Understanding the risk factors, clinical presentation, and diagnostic methods, all of which have changed over the years, are an integral part of helping patients manage celiac disease. It is critical that health professionals not only understand the gluten-free diet but can assist patients in preventing cross-contact with gluten both at home and when eating out, avoiding nutritional deficiencies, and coping with a significant dietary change.

The goal of this celiac disease continuing education program is to teach dietitians and other health professionals what they need to know to help manage patients with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Discuss the risk factors and clinical presentation of celiac disease.
  • Identify methods of diagnosing celiac disease.
  • Explain dietary management for people with celiac disease.
