Accidental injury is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Many injuries can be prevented by education-based interventions delivered by health professionals. Occupational therapists have the training and skill set to address this serious problem by increasing awareness through education in the community context. This module describes the prevalence and common causes of unintentional injury and the role of occupational therapy in injury prevention.


The goal of this educational program is to provide occupational therapy professionals with information on their role in preventing unintentional childhood injury.
After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify risk factors and barriers to prevention practices.
  • Demonstrate practical and relevant safety interventions at micro-, meso-, and macro-levels.
