Summary:

Contemporary healthcare requires efficient and effective interaction and teamwork by groups of diverse professional healthcare providers. This article outlines some of the research supporting the effectiveness of interprofessional (IP) team approaches, outlines essential features of IP teamwork and explains the emerging role of IP continuing education in supporting the establishment and maintenance of well-functioning clinical healthcare teams.

Objectives:

The goal of this interprofessional (IP) continuing education program for occupational therapists, dietitians, nurses, health educators, pharmacists and speech-language pathologists is to describe the emerging concept of IP continuing education and its role in improving outcomes for patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the benefits of IP team approaches for patients and professional care providers
  • Explain the role of interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) in facilitating care providers’ development of fully IP clinical practice
  • Describe IPCE instructional methods and structure

This is a course that should be evolving as therapists are constantly moving on to other positions, staff change personalities change, patient populations change- Now with new Medicare plan- patients will be discharged at faster rates and therapists need to be smarter/ wiser, and proficient at having the BEST/ICE place and increase comfort levels and abilities to work within this model
